Planning

Safe and efficient excavations start well before the dig. USIC effectively analyzes and projects demand which drives proper staffing to cover variable and seasonal demand. Our scale enables us to source, train and qualify staff while efficiently supporting all fleet, technology and equipment needs. Also see USIC's Design Locate solution.

811 Ticket

Whether you are planning to dig yourself or hire a professional, Call 811 BEFORE YOU DIG! It is a free call for free utility locating service. Call 811 at least a few days before you start any digging project (3 days required in some states). Smart digging avoids underground utilities and that means calling 811 before each dig. Pre-excavation

After your call to 811, utility owners in your area will send Locators to locate and mark underground utilities at your dig site. Chances are that USIC will mark utilities at your dig site. Beyond locating, USIC offers a suite of proactive solutions in support of safe digging including predictive analytics and specialized site services at high risk excavations.

Excavation

Approximately one quarter of underground utility damages are related to digging without an 811 ticket and over half of the damages are caused by excavator error. Coordination between all stake holders is critical for safe and efficient digging. Large scope "project" excavations and sites with difficult or high consequence infrastructure require special care.

USIC TECHNICIAN SAVES MAN FROM BURNING HOUSE   Show

Birmingham, AL Technician Keena Dowdell was performing a locate when he heard screams and ran to help. A nearby house was on fire, and the elderly, disabled man inside could not get out of the window or to his phone to call for help. Keena got his shovel and broke the window but could not loosen the security bar enough to get the man out. He began trying to force the front door open while calling the fire department and finally got through to help the man escape. The man was then taken to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation. “I just saw the man was in there trapped,” Keena described. “The house was on fire. I just tried my best to get him out of there. I feel really good about it. This is the first time I’ve been in a position to save someone’s life like that.” Thank you, Keena, for your heroic actions, which saved a life!
