USIC's Teddy Venable didn't back down when a Louisiana excavation team ignored his warnings of unmarked underground utilities. Teddy knew from his experience as a local locator that there were buried utility lines on the site - including gas. Boring without confirmation of utility line locations is not only unlawful, it is extremely dangerous.
Unsure what more he could do, Teddy called his manager, who was able to get to the site and stop the boring process. Teddy then quickly marked the utilities, protecting the infrastructure, the workers and the community.
Both, Teddy, and his manager are to be acknowledged for their efforts and the industry leadership they displayed. This story is a perfect example of a technician using Time Out Authority (TOA) and "If you don't know, ask," - two USIC programs that promote collaboration among our teams to drive Quality, Efficiency and Safety.
