Safety and Integrity in Action

Technician Provides First Aid to Unconscious Man on Roadside

May 28, 2025

Downstate NY Expert Technician Chris Macpherson put USIC's values of safety and integrity into action when he spotted a man lying in a ditch on the side of the road and stopped to help. He called 911 and checked on the man, who was unconscious with a weak pulse. A retired nurse and off-duty police officer pulled over shortly afterward and joined Chris in administering CPR until the ambulance arrived.

A few days later, Chris went to the man’s home to check on him and learned from his wife and sons that he had not survived. They were grateful to Chris for stopping to help and for sharing that their loved one was found near his lawn mower along the side of the road, information they had not been provided. They told Chris he was meticulous about caring for his lawn, even with his heart condition.

A veteran who served in Iraq, Chris has been in situations that have taught him that it is difficult to think that you may have been able to do something to help save someone's life. "It sits well with me that I tried,” he said of the first aid he provided.

Thank you, Chris, for putting safety and integrity into action to help a member of our community during a medical emergency and for providing comfort to a grieving family.
